A general question about bird forms.  I have noticed that some places to order turkey forms and other bird forms have you order by the weight of the bird.  Others ask for measurements.   Even though I am not a taxidermy expert I am familiar with birds.  I have hand raised quite a variety of birds in the past and race racing pigeons.  Not all birds of the same weight would have the same measurements.  Kind of like being a person.  You can have a 6 foot guy weighing in at 200 pounds and you can have a 5’5″ guy weighing in at 200 pounds.  Which means the entire body structure is different in different areas between the two guys.  I have ordered deer head forms in the past that said they were a certain size and when I received them they were two inches larger than what they were advertised.

I guess my question is it better to try and order a form according to measurements or order a form by weight and order a smaller weight to be sure the form will fit the skin.

As a turkey guy, I never order a form for a bird by weight. I only use that as a general guide. It all comes down to the fit after I have it fleshed, washed and dried.

I would order a number of different forms and test fit them( I keep a lot in stock). A form that fits too tight will give you nothing but trouble, and a form that is too small will also be a problem. You just have to mount a few until you get the “feel” right.

You are correct that not all birds with the same weight have the same body structure…..that is especially try with turkeys.

I find most forms to be a little on the large size and alter to get the right fit.

Wrap your own and you will not have to worry about it!  That is what I do.  Of course maybe since I am only a hobbyist I can spare the time so it is not as big a deal for me as a commercial shop where time matters.
