I am working on this pheasant, I wrap my own bodies and did all the measurements, blah, blah blah!  The neck was just over four inches (it was a big bird) from the body to the back of the skull.  I made my neck (just a little shorter than the four inches) and went to put it all together but the neck seems like it is too long.  Believe me guys (and gals) I can read a ruler.  It just doesn’t seem to be in proportion, like the bird is trying to look over a wall with its neck fully extended and unnatural.  I put the skin back into the freezer until I research this and figure out what is going on.  Any idea’s?

Vic,

It would be helpful if you posted a pic so we can see the issue.

I will post a pic in a few minutes on how I do my necks so you can compare.

Did you try pulling the neck skin up more towards the head?  Sometimes that is all that is needed.

Will post a pic in a few…

If you notice in the picture that I first drop the neck down and then pull it back up in an “S” shape . You can adjust the amount of the S depending on the pose.

I usually make my pheasant necks around  5 to 5 1/2 inches . But if you measured it then I will assume that this pheasant had a smaller sized neck,  they all vary somewhat .

I usually put some caulking in the neck and then taxi the skin towards the head to give the neck a nice full look.

I’ll second AJ’s suggestion.  I had left out the S bend on my first bird years ago.  Looked like it cross bred with a Girraffe!

It has been awhile since I did a pheasant so I see one of my mistakes.  On my wrapped formed I didn’t make the indent on the top of the form where the neck meets the body.  The other one is the need for the “S” on it.  Someone showed this to me long ago and I had totally forgot about it.

I guess it goes back to what I always tell my students in math class, “Use it or lose it!”  Thanks for the photo, and to this site for having professionals who didn’t zap me for what appears to be a simple question.
