OfflineI have noticed in all of the video’s I have watched the guys use borax to preserve the skin rather than the dry preservative that McKinzie and Van Dykes sell. I have deer heads on my wall that were preserved with what they called Bess Maid Preservative back in the 70’s which came from Touchstone Taxidermy supply. The hair and hide looks as good today as it did back then. I also used it on bird skins back then. The only down side that I seen was that it seemed to dry the hide and skins rather quickly which caused the skin to lose some stretch.
I was just wondering what the advantage of borax is compared to the dry preservative? There must be a good reason for it.
The biggest reason is dry preserve drys the bird skin out to fast. Borax gives you much more time to sew the bird up and align the feather tracks . Also borax is more than sufficient to preserve a bird skin . We do put dry preserve into our bird wings to speed up the drying process if needed. AJ
