All hail to all you bird taxidermists! This is the first bird I’ve mounted and I have to say it is a zillion times more difficult than any mammal I’ve ever worked on. From skinning (spent hours on skinning those wings! Far more time than any paw I’ve done) to mounting the only thing you bird people have on us mammal folk is the lack of going through the whole tanning thing.
This was going to be a ‘live’ mount, but my skills are not up to that yet and I have a hungry Bobcat to mount that would like something different than your average bobwhite. I might have gone all the way with a proper mount if I had purchased the right eye size, but the eyes I bought were too small for a realistic open eye, but perfect for that fresh kill look.
I degreased and then boraxed, and I’m going to dry it in a box of borax then clean up the eyes.
A million thanks to Wcwsscott for selling me the bird (and a few more) and then chatting with me and helping me through the process. One day I’ll do a live mount chukar, it is my goal!
