OfflineTo all of you turkey guys. If you were to rate the difficulty level of producing a decent turkey mount by someone who is just starting which pose would you say is the best to start with? So far I have mounted a walking jake which turned out decent for the first try. Then I tried the strutting pose and did well in all steps until it came time to setting the wings and getting the hackles to stand up in nice rows. Ended up throwing the full strut bird away because I didn’t feel it was going to turn out good enough to be displayed in my family room. I have one turkey remaining in the freezer and I am thinking about trying a flying mount with it. I recently mounted a flying pheasant which turned out nice so I am thinking that a flying turkey may be something I could have success with since it would just be on a larger scale. Am I thinking correctly?
I haven’t given up on the full strut pose by any means. Turkey season comes in here in about six weeks so I feel confident that I can get a couple nice gobblers to give the full strut a second try.
So here is my question. If you were to rate the different poses on the level of difficulty how would you rate them?
1. Full Strut.
2. Walking.
3. Gobbling on a limb.
4. Flying.

OfflineGary a stutter is got to be the hardest pose to do .It’s a lot of picking and grooming for days ! I use liquid nail in my turkey it doesn’t set up fast at all . You can shoot some in the back of your bird and smash it all around with your hands .then start pulling your feathers back there’s not much you can do at first but after a day you can really get them pulled up where you want them . I put mine on a mounting stand and tilt it forward that helps to keep them from falling back down . As for the wing position all they do is really just drop there wist down so the primary’s are going down . Just keep at it buddy and use some good reference also .

Thanks for the encouragement Tommy. I skinned out the bird I had in the freezer. The feather quality is excellent. I was going to do a flying mount since I figured I would have success with it. But then I was going to have to order another form and another head. I kept the strutting head from the one that I threw away and I have a strutting form that will fit this bird.
So I am going to bite the bullet so to speak and give the strutting pose and second shot. The worst that can happen is that I ruin another one. lol
It won’t be the first time in 62 years that I failed twice at something. 🙂

I thought you were coming along nicely with it. Never give up. Anyhow I’d go with the flying pose for your next, since the pheasant came out good.
