Looking at taking my first step in to duck Taxidermy. I’ve done a turkey wing and tail for my Jake decoy. Not much to that, cut them off and borax the heck out of it. I’ve shot a couple nice birds and would like to save them with out having to do the whole bird. Also, I’m not confident enough to do the whole thing. Anyway, I see a couple wings and a tail and a shadow box. Maybe a name plate?

Anyone done this? am I crazy? should I just pay $200 and have the done right?

I would suggest a couple of DVD’s, Page Nethercutt has some really good ones. Watch a few and see if its something you’d like to try. Its not as overwhelming when you can sit down and see how its done. If not, spend the $$$. Best of luck!

You can split them from stem to stern, clean, wash, degrease, then dry and borax. Stretch them out like little rugs. Sorta of like the museum study skins. As a bird guy myself though, its kinda hard for me to do that to a perfectly good skin.

I’m not so sure you can get a duck done right for $200.00. Spend $40.00 on a DVD watch it a couple times and give a it a try. Mounting your own will give you much more satisfaction than having it done by someone else. It may not be perfect, but the more you do it the better you’ll get.
