OfflineI have a cold and didn’t feel much like chasing deer around, so I stayed home. That is until about 1pm. I was going stir crazy, so I called the rancher where I hunt turkeys and headed out there to get some air and some sun, which is something we haven’t seen in about a month. Even though I knew that later in the season would be better because of pin feathers, I just needed to get out of the house.
Long story short, My goal was to get one of the bearded hens I saw this spring. I only saw one turkey today and yep, it was one of the bearded hens. I killed her at 26 yards. She has 7″ beard and weighed 7.5 pounds. These are Rio turkeys. That is the good news…
The bad news is that the wings are so heavily pinned that some of the feathers are very short and uneven as well as the tail. On the body, at least 40% and possibly up to 60% are pin feathers. The neck and breast are about 20% pinfeathers.
Since the wings do not look good and with all the pin feathers, I have chosen to get a hen body from Joe Coombs and an Anthony Eddie flying hen head. I will do a breast mount with the tail fanned and have the hen with her head back preening the rump/tail feathers. I have another tag, so I think December will be a good time to go again.
