OfflineI have killed 8 jakes and my grandson has killed 1. All Rios and 8 of them off the same property within a 200 yrd radius. Some of these were from the same brood. Most of the jakes I have killed were between 10 to 12 pounds, with 2 at 14 and 15 pounds. Most of them had 3 to 4 inch beards, however, some had beards that were less than 2 inches with one less than an inch.
My question is, what causes one jake to be 15 pounds with 3/4″ spurs and a 4″ beard and in the same group, one that is 10 pounds with a 1/4″ beard and a rubbery nub for a spur?
Are they from early and late nesting broods?
Nature!
I can’t really answer your question. Only to give you an example. Same parents, I have a daughter that is 5′ 4″ and another daughter that is 6’2″. One blonde, the other brunette. It’s buried in the genes someplace.
Probably not a satisfactory answer but as my students always say, “It is what it is!”

OfflineAfter more thought on the subject, Vic, I believe that genetics is probably the correct answer. Since they were killed within a 200 yard radius of each other, diet doesn’t seem that it would be a factor. If nesting occurred a month or two apart, I’m unsure that there would be that much of a difference a year later.
