OfflineOk I am finally starting my first bird. It is a blue wing teal. I was wanting to know when and how to install the wire that attaches the bird to the driftwood? I have watched Page’s flying teal and other TTL videos and they all have used other methods of attaching the birds. I have some what of and idea how to. Just wanted to see if anyone could tell me how they do it or tell me some videos that uses a wire to attach the bird.
Thanks,
Jonathan
After you make your neck, insert a 12-10 ga wire through the center of the body. Push it far enough thru to bend a U shape, the push back thru the body. Now mount the bird, leaving some slack around the wire so you can still move the skin naturally. My Eider video shows this, but otherwise, its just like the teal video.

OfflineIs the wire sticking out the seam and you stitch up around it? If so what if I want to position the bird belly out or need the wire to come out somewhere else? I probably just need to buy the Eider dvd. Thanks Page I like and have learned a lot from your wood duck and teal videos.
If you insert the wire through the belly, you sew around it. If you want it coming out the back, arrange the skin into position, then cut a small hole where you want the wire, push it through, coming out the chest, then horseshoe it and push it back into the chest to anchor it. Now bend the wire coming out the back at a 90 degree angle so you can lay it on the table, and sew him up. Have fun and thanks for buying the video!

OfflineI would start mounting the bird without the wire. Get the skin in place and pin.then take your wire, bend a “U” in it and run it through the skin. I would run it from one side of the bird to the other. then bend again and run through drift wood or base. Groom the feathers around the wire insertion point a bit and that’s it. Pretty easy.

If I am mounting a wall hanging ” Flying ” bird, I insert the head and neck of the form into the skin and adjust everything into place. Before I sew my seam, I insert a wire, bent in a ” u ” shape , as was stated earlier, through the form only on one side, then I pull the skin into place on the other side and push the wire on through the skin of that side and tap the curved part of the wire down into the form. Now I can pull the skin up into place over the curved part of the wire and sew my seam.
