OfflineI plan on going turkey hunting this fall. During the spring season I saw three bearded hens on the property I hunt. One was about 8″, one at about 5″ and one about 3″. I killed my limit of males one had a 93/4″ beard and an 8″ beard and only one spur at 1 1/2″! Any way, I saw the hens, after my limit was filled, while helping my grandson get a tom which he did.
I want to try to hunt one of those hens this fall and was wondering what I can expect when mounting one. I think pin feathers will be the biggest challenge and was wanting to know when the feathers will be less pinned. Season starts Oct. 15th to the end of December. Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The biggest issue will be pin feathers as you stated..the later the better in the season. I know our birds here in WI are looking much nicer by late Nov.
Also fall birds tend to have a little more moisture in the legs. You will want to inject some preservative after the master blend has set up.

OfflineThanks Aaron. It’s good to know I am on track with my thinking with the feathers, so, knowing this, I will be going in late November and December. I haven’t used Master’s Blend. I use Fantastic cast as I heard by, I think Frank Newmyer, that it is a preservative also. This year, a well noted bird taxidermist told me that this is not the case. Do you recommend any particular preservative?
I am not sure what exactly is in fantastic cast, but I would doubt it is a preservative.
I use knobloch’s feet injection fluid ( McKenzie) .” Preserve it” also works( i think it is rittel’s brand)
A lot of people think you mix it with the masterblend, but you always want to use it after the master blend or fantastic cast has set up.
