…tell me what I should have done different. It just don’t look right to me, or is just an unnatural pose and the feathers can’t do what I want them to.
I’ll be the first to tell you Im not a bird guy and these breast mounts are not one of my favorites. I definately don’t like the legs like that but the client sent me a photo of one he had done and wanted me to do this one as close as possible to his other one.
It’s on a Tim Jordan breast form I altered and Brett D. at Boondocks freeze dried and painted the head form me.

I would have done a number of things different.
I would have kept the scapular groups of feathers on the bird. I also would have kept more hackle. Your mantle feathers are not groomed well, and it looks like some are missing. You also do not have any definition between the mantle and the breast feathers. The feather groups should have distinct start and stop “lines”.
Your head is also set off a little form the middle of the breast. It looks like you have tucked way to much skin up under your head……the feathers you have directly under your head are to large and look out of place. Maybe if you had defined the neck a little more it would have better flow.
Not a bad mount, especially for a breast mount….but you asked for a critque .Thats my best guess.

Thanks Aaron.
X2 I knew it didn’t satisfy me, but you lost me on all those terms. I’ll just stick to my mammals.
Thanks for the critique, but you lost me a little with the feather names. Do you have one mounted similar that we could compare? Where you could point these areas out to me and anyone else who is interested.
I appreciate your time.
Yes, it looks like you cut out to much of the hackle when you were skinning( the feathers from behind the mantle to the tail, or the part that stand up strait when a bird is strutting).
I see on the pic you went by that they did keep the scapulars on( the feather group on each side of the head).
The mantle feathers are the “pan” of feathers directly behind the head btw.
Here is one I did. My client skinned the bird and didn’t leave much hackle. Not that I’m the final word on turkeys, but you get the idea….

If this one is more what you are talking about Aaron, doesnt’ these groups of feathers go past the wings?
If so what do you do about the area where the wings are supposed to be?
I really think a turkey was not designed by God to have a shoulder mount done on it. I guess maybe because it doesn’t have shoulders.
Thats great…it is nice piece you did.
The scapulars are not part of the wing…..you can remove the wing and leave them on the bird. I would just sew off the open area were the wing meets the body, and tuck the skin around the scaps and the breast feathers to make it look nice. You are right…..they are not meant to be shoulder mounts lol.
