I am getting ready to mount my first quail, I don’t do alot of birds so not sure which bodies would work best. I’m doing a male and female gambel quail, what bodies do those of you who do alot of birds prefer?Thanks for your input.
C, quail are small enough that I carve them. It will also help you to understand their anatomy better. Just trace the body on a piece of foam a little thicker than the body. Cut out most of it with a knife. Then fine tune with a rasp and sandpaper. Be sure to use calipers to get it down to size. Takes about 15 minutes.
As Page said, trace, carve, rasp and CALIPER the body. You may have already thought of this but just in case, I like to save the neck from the carcass. Doing this tells me exactly where it bends and more importantly where it does not. Good luck to you!
