OfflineFor some reason I couldn’t find the reply button on Roger’s gobbling turkey picture so I will ask here. When you mount a turkey on a limb is it better to go ahead and put it on the limb as you are mounting it or use a piece of plastic pipe as I have seen done in some pictures.
I was just wondering what happens if you can’t find a piece of plastic pipe the exact same size as the limb that the bird will finally be on. It seems like when I use the master blend I end up getting it on the base so that would be bad if it got on the real limb.
I know this is probably a stupid question but I don’t mind asking stupid questions. 🙂
Ideally, You should mount the turkey on the limb so you get as close as possible of a match with the toes. You are correct about the master blend getting on the limb, so you need to protect the limb with plastic. I wrap mine in heavy duty clear garbage bags. That way you can still see the limb while you are setting up the legs.
Many of the birds I mount go on pre made limbs like HQ and McKenzie sells. I know the diameter so I can match them up with the corresponding size pvc pipe. One advantage of using pvc is the base is much easier to mount on and access the bird then mounting it on the limb to start. It is also easier to move around the shop ( and load in the clients vehicle) .

If it is a legitimate question it is never stupid! I always tell my students, “If you have a question, speak up. I can’t read your mind. If you have the question, most likely there are at least five others in the class with the same question.”
Thanks for asking it. I will remember that when I do a turkey…one day!
