OfflineI have purchased a couple different videos on skinning and mounting turkeys. I purchased one video that shows the incision down the chest. The other video shows leg to leg. Just wondering what other people on here prefer. Turkey season comes in here in a couple weeks and I hope to have a couple given to me to practice on. One video shows heavy wire being used in the legs and the other shows all threaded rods. One video carded the birds wing and the other video used tape on the wings. I used the blue painters tape on the wings of the mallard I just did and when I removed the tape I could see where it had been. I was able to wipe the residue off with a damp cloth and it was no longer noticeable.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated to help keep me from making a major mistake this first time around.
I make the incision leg-to-leg. Use tape on the wings (usually clear packing tape so I can see the feathers through it. I’d read a few years ago of someone else who used that as well. They said the clear didn’t seem to leave as much residue as the masking tape). I recently found a couple of metal pieces that are marketed to use to break into your car if you lock the keys in it. Found them at one of those “$1 Shops” I think. They are really thin and flexible.Going to try them on the tail of my next turkey, using magnets to hold them together.
As you’ve found, you can ask 10 different taxidermists how to do something and get 10 different answers (much like Doctors!).
Hope this helps. Just my .02 worth.

OfflineThanks for your input Vicki. I know what you mean about getting different answers to questions. Everyone has their own technique and from watching the video’s both techniques seemed to work for those guys. They are both well known taxidermists. I am not to worried about skinning the bird out and fleshing it down. I won’t have a problem with preparing a nice clean skin.
Where I am probably going to run into some trouble is getting the skin on the form correctly and everything in place like it should be. I have watched both of the video’s numerous times and I am still not quite sure how much caulk they are using when they insert it and if they manipulate it with their hands once it is under the skin or if it just stays where they insert it. The videos don’t really show that part.
This turkey may look like it has had a very bad hair day.
That is why I am getting a couple to practice on. I have no intention of starting a business anyway. I just want the satisfaction of knowing I can produce an adequate mount if I want. I realize by looking at the pictures on this site that I am to old to get as good as the guys on here.
If I get good enough to do my 9 year old grandson’s first turkey when he gets one I will be happy.
Go with the leg to leg incision. Use 6 gauge and thread it.
I am working on a 14 hour in depth turkey training course for Taxidermy Insider . I should have it completed in June. It will clearly show how to inject caulking and how to manipulate it, along with all the tricks I use to do turkeys full time.
If you have any other questions in the mean time, I will try to help.

OfflineWatch out buddy, I’m first in line!! Ha! Seriously, Aaron is the Turkey God! I can’t wait for their course to be finished! The Insider videos are absolutely fantastic and judging by other turkey dvd’s that I’ve watched, and although they were great, I would expect Insiders to be the best!

OfflineI just did my first turkey. I did the breast incision and then leg to leg. I have no idea why I did both other than I was in a hurry. It was over a year ago when I skinned it and seem to remember getting “lost” as I was doing leg to leg and did the breast incision to expedite the process. Other than more sewing, it went together pretty well. When I do a project, I usually buy two to four DVDs and mix and match the procedures to fit my style of doing things and I come up with “my own” way to do it, which is a melding of all the DVDs .

Is that going to be available on a DVD? It will take fifty years and a day to get that in on my internet service! Just kidding, but my internet service is lousy but it is all that I have available. I have a turkey skin in the freezer but have never done one…yet. The problem is I don’t have the carcass to get measurements off of like when I skin ducks etc. I have one turkey video but it does not show how to measure without the meat. One of these days when I have time I will look into it more.
As for taping wings, when I do birds I use plain ole cheap Scotch (generic, not the real thing) tape. Before I put it on the wings I stick it to my clothing to take some of the stick off it. This leaves very little residue, if any.
Hi Vic
I am getting requests for DVD’s,but at this time it is more cost effective to have them online because of the length of our videos lessons. Being that the course I am making is so in depth, it is going to be over 14 hours worth of video to get all the information in. The winds are blowing in the direction of instant access online streaming of videos and we are trying to get in on the front end of it.
I realize you have a slower internet connection, but our videos are set up on a World wide content distribution network to speed up playback . I don’t know if you tried playing our intro video yet, but if you haven’t ,try it and let me know how the playback is for you. http://www.taxidermyinsider.com
As far as the body measurements go, don’t worry about it. The anatomy changes so much on a turkey when it is strutting/ gobbling that many of the measurements will not be accurate. It all comes down to fit on the forms.

Hi Aaron,
I watched the preview on the flying pheasant and it did download quick enough that it did not “stall out” (freeze up or whatever you want to refer to it as). The only problem I have is that for me, watching an instructional video just once is never enough. Can it be saved to my computer for future use? I don’t have an internet connection where I do the taxidermy. I may have to do something about that in the near future! This could really open up a whole new avenue of training.

Thank you for checking out the video playback and reporting in. I am glad it played ok for you without buffering. What you actually just did is streaming, not downloading. Downloading means the files are copied onto your computer. Insider uses the same model as Netflix and Hulu in this regard.
I could use your feedback Vic and everyone else on here on this. Please tell me your thoughts on these two options :
At this point, Taxidermy Insider is set up as a membership site. You pay one low monthly cost and get access to all of our video content.you can watch the videos as many times as you want, as long as you stay a member. The benefit over buying DVD’s in this case is you get access to many hours of video for one low monthly cost, instead of having to buy all of the dvds at once for hundreds of dollars, plus you get support and access from any internet connection. I will admit this is a VERY new concept for the taxidermy industry. Someone had to take the first big step in this direction, and we did it. Currently it is not available offline, but our videos do play on tablets and smartphones so you can still watch them in your shop using the phone internet .
The other model we are possibly looking at running in tandem with Taxidermy Insider is offering the same video course as on Insider, but making them available to you forever for one larger up front price. Here is an example using the upcoming Turkey course:
Option 1- Pay $35.00 a month to access all of the content on Taxidermy Insider, including the 14 hour turkey course. This option also comes with online support. You can view the course as many times as you want as long as you are still a member of the site. You would need an internet connection.
Option 2- Pay $100 up front and have access to the entire 14 hour turkey course forever on a separate web site. When you buy the turkey course, it would be permanently put into your secure account on the site for you to watch anytime you want. You would still need an internet connection as you would not be downloading the course. Downloading files that large would take up a LOT of space on your computer. This option would not come with online support
Seeing as so many things are now being stored in the cloud, most computers do not have the storage space required for downloading these kinds of files. For quality reasons, we shoot our videos at a very high frame rate and full hd resolution .This makes the files HUGE and tough to work with. You can imagine the storage space we need to have on our editing computers !!
Just want to touch on the DVD thing again…… There are many reasons why we didn’t go the DVD route, but here are a few of the major reasons
– Cost . We can produce higher quality, longer videos for less cost to you.
– Instant access . No need to wait or pay for shipping .
– Distribution . Insider is designed to access a World Wide market . Trying to ship outside the US can be a hassles and add extra cost. With Insider our members outside of the country can get instant access to all of our training .We already have a number of members from Europe and Asia .
– On the go learning. Unlike DVD’s , You can watch our videos on any device that has an internet connection
– DVD’s are old hat . They still work and will always be around, but the future is in online streaming.
I need your feedback guys….tell me what you think !! What option would you prefer, or would you like to have the choice between the two depending on the content ?

OfflineI am in either way. I personally like the monthly fee with the online support. I am just excited about the sound of how thorough the instruction is going to be. As I have stated in previous posts, I have purchased four separate videos relating to birds. They have been great and got me started in a very positive way. However, there was two or three unanswered questions left to the imagination and no real way of getting an answer to those questions unless you find a forum of helpful people. I believe had I been able to get the answer to a couple simple questions I would have done a better job the first couple of times. And understandably so, some people don’t like divulging their secrets in an open forum. So to me, a monthly fee where I can watch a thorough video as many times as I want and to be able to ask a question that I know I will get answered is a good deal to me.
Aaron I don’t know if I am doing something wrong or what but I went to your site and checked about signing up. I could never get to where it would let me sign up. I clicked on becoming a member but that is as far as I could get. I may have to get my wife to figure it out. lol She is the one who buys and signs up for stuff on the internet. I just go to work every day to pay for it.
Gary
Thank you for your feedback. It is very helpful. We have heard the same feedback from others who have joined the site. We are definitely keeping the membership model going.
As far as signing up on the site, your membership probably went into the shopping cart. I just made an adjustment that pushes you directly to the cart after you hit the ” sign up now” button. It should make it a little easier to sign up. You may want to refresh your page when you get to the site before you try to sign up. I am here to help if you have any questions.
Thanks again Gary !

I like the monthly subscription option but in the case of the turkey course, I could see where people would like to purchase the course.
Joe, I think you hit the nail on the head. This would be a great combination. Kind of like the best of both worlds so to speak.
