OfflineI do several turkey fan/beard displays a year and practice various turkey taxidermy displays for myself, family and friends. Every time I do a turkey for myself and friends and family, my skin burns and itches and I get little bug bites. Every turkey. Some that I work on for customers do not leave me with these bug bites. I thought maybe the bugs here are different. So, I started to freeze the turkey whole for a month or more to kill the bugs before I worked on them. I still got the symptoms. The bugs should be dead! What gives? The last turkey I worked on was my grandsons second turkey taken off our sweet spot. Same situation with the issues with burning, itching and bug bites… except, This time the bug bites turned into blisters and a lightbulb came on, Poison oak! Now I can prepare for it and I believe my turkey taxidermy will be much more enjoyable. YEEEHAWWW!!
That makes a lot of sense. If anything is going to get into poison oak, it is going to be a turkey. Hope it works out for you in the future !

OfflineI believe that me wearing gloves minimized my reaction from it as I am dangerously alergic to Poison oak, ivy and sumac. The deer I usually kill and the turkeys too, live in and on poison oak and ivy.
Technu has a group of products that dissolve the oils from them preventing the reaction from getting worse as well as a preventative application and one to relieve the burn/ itch and blisters. There are other brands that do this as well.
I was hospitalized for poison oak and received several shots and then weekly, then monthly booster shots. Now, although I still get it, It isn’t life threatening. I get blisters the size if quarters and scars from it if I’m not careful.
I try to hunt in high elevation above the poison oak thresh hold, however, I have much better luck hunting critters that emerge from the nasty bushes and vines. I am also very allergic to trees and wood. I must be a glutton for punishment because I worked in a woodworking shop for years until I couldn’t take it anymore, I sure did love the work though, and I live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon where the cash crops are trees for lumber, nuts and fruit and tons of poison oak and ivy. Yikes!
