OfflineHello all, I have a question, I’m sure it’s been asked b4 so I’m sorry for any reiteration, I have a snow goose and a Mallard Drake I want to do, first the snow goose then the Drake because I don’t want to start with the better bird! These r the first birds I have ever shot and I did so on a wounded warrior hunt in Illinois earlier this month, anyway my question is this, after I remove the meat and flesh it, then degrease it, is there a “tan” product I should buy? I have heard of using a tan product, using white gas, Coleman gas and if course just borax! What do you suggest? I want these birds to come out great and last longer then me, btw I have done European skull mounts and regular antler mounts, this is my first real taxidermy attempt! Thanks again for any help given, glad to be a part of this site!
Realhunt, there is a tan you can use, but I’m not familiar with it. I’ve always used dry preservative myself. Its what my Dad taught me with. We took apart some 30yr old birds he had done with it, and they were still fine. As far as which bird to do 1st, the duck will be easier, by far. And if the snow is in bad shape, just use it for practice. Proper cleaning, washing, and degreasing are important in order to have a nice mount. It sounds like you have some basic knowledge of doing a bird, but you haven’t done one yourself. Birds are very easy to do when done correctly. If not, they can make you pull all your hair out! Make sure you use an artificial head and a foam body. They are easier to learn with. You can wrap or carve one yourself after you’ve learned a little more. Have you obtained any (how to) books or videos that you can use for help? If not and you’re just gonna give it a shot, you will run into some issues that can make you (give up) looooonnng before that goose will be cleaned. It takes a lot patience and many guys quit taxidermy after their 1st piece. Good luck!

OfflinePage thanks 🙂 yes I have done some research, talked to a few taxidermist and watched some videos, the reason I wanted to do the goose first was practice, I really want the Duck to come out nice and I do not care about the goose as much! I think I got the cleaning, degreasing part down it’s just the “preserve” part that worries me, I don’t want to to big out or fall apart so I was looking for some advice on that, and yes I plan on def doing an artificial head and body 🙂
