Alright im very interested in using white gas . Just wondering when to use it and how long to you let it soak and dry. Do you do it after a few washes of dawn or what and is it just basically Coleman lantern fluid? Do you tumble afterwards?

you really don’t have to gas to get a clean bird. But if you want to try it, gas after your washes and rinses. Soak for 20 min then hang outside, tumble if you want and dry. Here’s something to try. get a good drgreaser I use Lipa solv 55 de greaser from TruBond http://trubondtanning.com/Taxi…..rs_c10.htm it work’s very good for de greasing birds. Do one bird with gas, one with out gas, then see if it’s worth gassing. The added expense and harmful fumes just isn’t worth it to me anymore. I had a friend that had his tumbler blow up after gassing. I did two turkeys, and two ducks, one gassing one with a good degreaser, I couldn’t tell the difference.

Are you using the degreaser at the same point as you you would for the white gas?

I too had a friend end up in the hospital after tumbling a bird he had gassed. The tumbler exploded when he opened the lid. I also have one that blew every window out of the house, and another that nearly burnt his shop to the ground. I will pass on the Coleman fuel. The ONLY thing it does to a properly cleaned skin is displace the water so it dries faster. If you are tumbling anyway, it’s hardly an advantage. To answer your question, if you insist on using it you would gas the bird after all cleaning, degreasing, and rinsing has occurred.

Coleman fuel is nasty stuff. If you are going to use it, you have to take the proper precautions ( that no taxidermists ever take).
I quit using it year ago. Like Cole said if your going to tumble it isn’t necessary to gas them to displace the water.
Unfortunately, I to have had colleagues and friends that have had accidents using white gas. I would avoid using it.

I recently started using Acetone with better results.  Seems to be a bit stronger than gas.  I do not tumble in a dryer but squeeze out the Acetone and throw the skin in a tub of corn cob grit.  Works very well for me.
