OfflineI’m hoping to get a Merriams in WY and also SD this spring. I’ll also be huntin central WI on my relatives property which usually is a slam dunk hunt. Really excited about going out west though after Merriams. HOPEFULLY I’ll add at least one to my Turkey collection!

OfflineWere are you from and hunting? Turkey season does wear me out. Im usually up around 3:30/4:00 depending where I hunt. I like to be set up an hour before sunrise as I often like to set up close to roost first thing (if I have birds roosted). Can usually get really close but again the key is getting in really early.

I think I am going to give it a try this year. First time I have been after turkey since before my military days (and believe me, that was a long, long time ago). Fortunately I don’t have to travel to get to mine. It will be on my own property and nobody has hunted turkey here since I owned it over 23 years now. I see them from time to time for a week or two and then they are gone for weeks and months before they come around again.
Good luck to all who go!

OfflineI am from WV. Good many turkeys in the area I live. My son got into it a couple about three years ago. He is ate up with it at this point. He got good at calling them in. He likes to be in the woods well before daylight also. He has got his limit the last two years. Been quite a few years since I did any bird taxidermy so I am anxious to try one of his turkeys this year.

OfflineTurkey hunting has literally tuned into an obsession for me. If you really want to help your son out – mount him up a hen decoy! I have been using them for quite a few years now and swear by them. I’d imagine some of the high end plastic ones might work well too such as DSD and Avian X and will have to give them a shot some day, but it’s just too hard not to use a stuffer especially with the success I’ve had.

OfflineI’ve got some pics I can upload when I get home. I would highly suggest an upright/alert position. After years of experimenting and having as s many as 5 different poses out, it is the one they will go to every time.

That is a good looking decoy. No way a plastic one can compete with the real thing. I have been sitting in my woods the last couple days and have noticed a few more birds than usual coming over to my property lately. My wife does not understand why I think these eastern turkeys are a beautiful bird! Maybe after I get on mounted and it has sit in the front room for awhile she may come to appreciate them. If not, too bad! The bird is still going to go up there.

OfflineI “lucked” into a real sweet piece of property in 2011. I have killed 3 birds a year in the past 3 years and I’m hoping to do it again this year. We are allowed three here in Oregon. I have only killed toms by setting myself up for ambush as they feed in a certain direction. This year I want to try getting them to come to decoys.

OfflineTanglewood, sounds like you’re on the right track – and by that I mean your set-up. Too many turkey hunters wander aimlessly through the woods calling in “good looking” spots hoping to call a tom to them. Yes there are times when that works and every tom wants to come to the call but there are more times than not when they have their minds made up on where they are going and being set-up in the right spot makes the difference between filling a tag or going home empty handed. Good luck this spring and may your success continue!

OfflineI came close to getting a nice tom several times yesterday evening, opening day, and ended up shooting a jake. He came to 15 yards from my ambush point and stuck his neck up high and dared me to shoot. I just couldn’t resist and took him up on it. I jellied his head good. He just fell over on his back and flapped his wing three or for times and was done. I love it when a plan comes together and after coming so close so many times earlier in the evening, I was rally wanting to make my kill stick go boom. Now I have two more tags, so it’s time to hold out for a larger tom. It was my twelfth turkey and my second jake. Good eats ahead. Smoker is ready to go!
