For you bird people!

I got tired of trying to keep all the different sizes of wire separated for quick access so I devised a way to keep it straight.

First I built a pull out drawer and mounted it under my bench.

Next I had to search out something to put the wire in and keep it separated but easily accessible.  I attempted to use PVC cut lengthwise into two halves and this would have work if I had a table saw.  It didn’t cut so straight with a reciprocating saw so I went to Lowes looking for ideas and I found this (below) in the dry wall section.  (Also a lot cheaper than PVC!)

I cut these pieces to four foot lengths to match the length of most of the wire I had and stapled them in place to the bottom of the drawer and separated the wire by size.

There you have it.  All the different sizes of wire you will need to do most of all the birds you will ever see from sparrows to swans.

The only encounter I had was that some of the wire had gotten mixed up with other sizes and when you get old like me your eyesight isn’t was it used to be.  So with the help of this device I stole borrowed from my son for this project I measured the wire for thickness to separate it.

No more hunting and fishing for the correct size wire!

This is an approximate diameter for each size wire in case you want to organize yours and it is all mixed up like mine was.  I do not have the official exact measurement.  You guys know I am a math fanatic to this is an average of twelve pieces.

18 gauge   1.0 mm

16 gauge   1.5 mm

15 gauge   1.75 mm

14 gauge   2.0 mm

13 gauge   2.4 mm

12 gauge   2.7 mm

11 gauge   3.0 mm

10 gauge   3.5 mm

9 gauge    3.75 mm

8 gauge   4.1 mm

I have never had a need for anything thicker so I will stop here.  Maybe it will help someone someday!

Good idea and nice write up. If you want, I can put that in an article form and add it to the homepage.

Good idea Vic.  I have my wire laying up against the wall in the corner.  Real pain in the butt when I need a piece.
