OfflineGuys/gals, im new and just got into airbrushing in general. Literally about 2 weeks ago i got my first airbrush and compressor and did a few baits but the goal was to always paint fish. I dont believe in doing skin mounts, as i know a lunker had to be killed in order to do so, just my opinion. So im only going to do replicas. This is my first replica painting. Its not all the way complete as i still have to add the side fin, do mouth work, add gills, put on the clear coat, etc. But i was wondering with what i have done so far, some of you who have been in the game a while can give me any opinions or advice i can fix or keep the same before i continue to finish the fish and finally seal. Thanks!

Good effort for your first fish ! There are a number of things you should do different on your next fish. I would not try to go back and make major changes at this point. My advice would be to take the time to study reference and buy a few good dvds and apply what you learned from them on your next fish.
Remember, a lunker had to be killed to make a replica also………

Your back ground colors are too muddy looking. Your baring that basically follows the lateral line is much to large. The rows of spots under the lateral line bars( lower third of fish) are incorrect…. Try toning them down and work on better airbrush control. Your fins could use some angle spraying.and some people would tell you your belly white is to harsh. Keep at it and you will improve quickly . The next one will go much smoother for you.
My preference is to kill trophy fish, so we probably wouldn’t get along in the same boat lol.

Nice first fish. As stated earlier, your barring on the side is too big. Each bar should only be 4 to 5 scales in height. Your barring on the head is also incorrect, the front bar does not originate from the eye but in front of it, and the middle bar does not extend into the gill flap. You also are lacking in fin detail. Overall a very nice first attempt. Get reference pics and compare them to what you have, learn to break the pic down in areas.
As for colors, I use silver, dusty rose, white, white pearl, candy yellow ochre, candy dark green, intense red, candy paynes grey, and multiple dry powders for tipping. These colors are just a general guide, I will vary the intensity on different fish, some more yellow, some more green, etc. The main thing is study the fish, play with your airbrush and come up the paint scheme that works best for you.

Here are the only two fish I have pics of at the moment because of a computer crash a while back. They are obviously not bass, but you do not need to go by my bass or any other taxidermists. Look at pictures of live fish or better yet, go fishing.

Here is a photo of my new obsession. I have 3 aquariums in my shop now, and what you can learn is amazing.
Good job on first fish. Practice as much as you can with your air brush. Thin your paints. Use different psi settings. Get very familiar with what you can do with your air brush. Less paint the better. Get Rick Cranes Dvd on painting reproduction large mouth bass and a set of reference pictures. Study those pictures . Have those pictures out where you can see them when your painting. That will get you in the right direction.
