Seen on Lake Gaston up on the NC/Va border. I thought it was a hickory Shad to begin with but they have forked tails.

Boy that is a tough one? Best guest… Long base of dorsal fin remaining, small head deep operculum, heavy scale structure, I would say possibly a Quillback Sucker Carp? It also could be my next door neighbor too he does kind of look like that! LOL!

I agree it is in the carp family. Maybe this one. The website I borrowed this pic from is calling it a Common or European Carp.

i agree with aaron, looks like a grass carp… D. its not a common carp because look in the second picture how long the dorsal fin runs down the back, as opposed to the fin on the fish your original picture

I think we all agree it is some species of Carp.

How about a carp lesson? Anyone up for it?

Lets start with whats an “Operculum”?

the operculum is the gill plate, or the part of the head that extends back and protects the gills… you might also hear it called the gill flap or gill cover, but its all the same

Operculum = A lid or flap covering an aperture, such as the gill cover in some fish
