I use a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water. I skin, rough flesh, wash, soak, final flesh, then mount, works great. As long as you wash it before you put it in the mix, the mix will last forever…I store mine in the bottom of the fridge, slows evaporation. in a closed container of course…..DC

You want to use powdered borax & water. The granulated borax will not disperse in the water column correctly. It may still do some good, just not as much as the powdered.

With your crappie: I would steer clear of the denatured alcohol. You want to give it a quick two hour soak in the borax/water and mount it or refreeze it. Most people run into trouble with crappies because they over soak them. They need very little soak time. Also , the water should be COLD.

I use regular borax from WalMart with no issues. I agree don’t over soak crappies.

If you use 50/50 alcohol make sure you rehydrate it in some water before mounting. Also, if you cut that down to about 30% alcohol I think you will like the results even better. (and it’s cheaper)
