HEy Honeybee Man! Dark is a great start now you have to work out the tone value you want! I hope you have tried again! As I always say the key to great any thing is practice! I never have considered my self talented just really devoted and disciplined to the pursuit of perfect practice! All of my students MUST learn how to practice when they are here do they all practice.. I can’t say but the ones who do learn how to make adjustment and enjoy the process of learning how and WHY color works! I know you bought a DVD so you truly want to learn more and do more when it comes to getting to the next level so I want you to take a white paper plate and lay out some of the same colors in the order I used them in the DVD and for with them until you see the coilor you desire to see! I know you can do my friend and I want to see photos of your work! I love getting photos for members and friends and I have been know to reach out and help from time to time! 🙂
Keep working at as I do… I hope to one day get as good as I would like to be then I can start all over again!

Mr Rick, Do i need to add retarder to my paint? When i go to paint it seems to want to splatter,My deer heads it does not do it , i guess because i don’t Shade as long. I use the Velocity so should i add a drop or two in it to stop the splattering. My paint on fish seems to look a little grainy if that makes sense !HELP!!!!!!

I will let Rick answer your question, but you have more going on then adding retarder will cure.
Very nice fish gentlemen. I really like the detail on the Dolphin head Rick.

Truly awesome Grass Crap Mr.Stehling
The question regarding retarder… only 3 things can go wrong with the process of painting.
1. the airbrush
2. the paint
3. the user
More times then not I always put my bet on me as the user when things go wrong. Like Mr.Stehling said there could be several factors going on here? I would post it to see what other have to say. It is always fixable just need more information. Taking a shot with out having all the cards in the deck most of the paints we use typically are pre- mixed just like anything else there is a window that is best to use a product. When paint sits in the cup of your airbrush for 5 mins or so as you paint the properties are evaporating creating a thickness issue (paint gets tired!) at this point you want to dump what you have left back in to the container and re-shake then get more paint back in the cup this often helps the issue. Retarder is the base material or vehicle for the paint so if you add it in the wrong proportions you change the properties of the paint. Not to sound like I’m making a plug but on disk 2 of the newer DVD I cover some of this regarding paint and airbrushes and trouble shooting. I still would throw the questions out there as you are not the only one I guarantee that you not the only one!
My BEst!
Rick
