Ok.. I am new to taxidermy all together but the main thing I would really like to figure out how to do is fish, mainly trout. Is this a bad fish to start out on? Is there and good videos that would help? Is there any kits that give you everything that you need to start and finish one? Would like to do skin mounts. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

It’s not the easiest fish to start with, but if you have plenty to practice with I would go for it.

I would avoid kits like the plague.. especially for trout. There is a good chance that 50% of whats in a “complete” kit is worthless for trout mounting.

I would take a one on one course with a seasoned fish taxidermist and cut to the chase. If your serious about doing a good job, this is the best way to go.

Great advice from the Greg and Arron! As a teacher my self I would tell you that what ever you start with is a good begging as there is no experience like doing something! There will be lots of challenges and successes as well. Learn to draw a template even if you are going to purchase a commercial body. The template will give you some guidance to where things need to be when you get to the taxidermy part of the process. What I like to do break the fish down in to small jobs lets say skinning. The body is one part the head is an other and the fins can be another for example. The nervousness you get in your gut is normal as when your not sure about what your doing many questions pop in your head! Relax and know that the best fish you will ever do has not hit your workbench as of yet!

Be patient and take each step as a learning process! You can do it for sure!!!! Remember nothing comes easy especially taxidermy! You should have seen my first 50 mounts! Well… maybe not they were pretty terrible! Good thing is today you have great folks willing to help such as on this wonderful site!

My BEst!
