im fixing up a walleye mount for my uncle, he accidently snapped a fin clean-off, and while i was working on it i noticed to fins are backed with a rubber or silicone material, it looks like it was poured on the fins and then probably spread around with a tongue depressor or somethin like that. The fins are really flexible, and a lot less fragile than the fins i get with the silk span and flexible fin finish combo. The date on the back of the fish is 1999, so its an older mount, but i was wondering if this was a product that might still be available, or if its some special method that some of you might know about. I’m just curious is all, they make the mount really heavy and you probably wouldnt want to use it on a competition peice, but making a durable mount is pretty important in commercial taxidermy, and in case i decide to ever get into it, this might be something good to remember…
It is probably just that, Silicone. I have seen it used several times…You can brush it on the front with little trouble the back gets a little tricky. I know a fellow who still uses caulk and cardboard……I use tacky glue now after greg sterling turned me on to it… I like the results….Clear and flexable and inexpensive…..DC
