Just was wondering if there is a trick to getting nice crisp ear edges, seems like mine always look messed up. Also is it better to sew holes on edges? I read the article in the last issue of breakthrough and I’m going to try that on my next set. Thanks Cindy

Cindy, are you using ear-liners or bondo?

The main two things are that the ears are turned all the way to the edges with all the cartiledge removed and you get them as thin as possible.

Sand the ear-liners along the edges get them as thin as you can so the hair will lay correctly along the edge.

I use earliners,I use the fabric ones tried bondo once that was a mess. I always sand my edges just like you said D. but I do think that sometimes I don’t get them opened up all the way. Also what glues do you guy’s use, I have tried a couple of different things from hide paste to rtv to 2-part epoxies. I like Van Dykes fast, the only problem is I’m allergic to most of the 2part epoxies so I have to dress up in my haz-mat gear.

Cindy, I would suggest ditching the Haz-Mat suit, and trying some of the plastic ear-liners.

I use the Eppley 360’s(that is for Whitetails). If you will get them shaped and sized to fit, rough/sand them real well you can use the same hide paste that you use on the form. (I use Derma-Grip from nose to shoulders) No special epoxy glues are needed if the skin is tanned and prepared properly, and the mannikin is correct.

Thanks D. I’ve had several people tell me to use bondo as my adhesive but I’m not sure how reliable that will be. Who’s plastic earliners would you suggest for mule deer and elk? I’m not a big fan of Jonas plastic liners?

Ive been using dermal grip with epply earliners with success as long as I leave a little slack in the ear skin.

Cindy, the best I’ve used are Bill Lancasters 3D series from Trufitt but they are pretty pricey. Trufitt also has a series that are injected plastic if you don’t mind them having the butts molded on them, but they are more economical.

Sell me Chris. What does it do Derma-Grip, Buckeye, Bryan’s Supreme, 555 and all the others don’t do?

For awhile Buckeye was the best thing ever, then I hear nothing is better than 555, now I hear Pro 1. Don’t take me the wrong way, Im just playing devil’s advocate.

It seems to me that Hide Paste is a fad kinda thing, one comes and then goes and along comes the new best thing ever.

My opinion is, if you have your skin properly tanned/prepped and a form that is anatomically correct, the right size and properly prepped any of these glues will work equally well. I mean all it does is hold the skin to the form, right?

And for the record, the reason I use Derma-Grip is we carry it at HQ and I don’t have to pay shipping on it.

I use the pro 1 and like it very well, I haven’t tried it for earliners but will doe so. The reason I like it is it drys fairly slow so I can adjust things for a day or two. Thanks for all the help everyone. Cindy

You know D I have used everyone of the hide paste you have listed. They all work some work better than others. Pro 1 is the paste I like best right now!!! I was using 555 for a couple of years and it done ok then I had a couple of friends told me about Pro 1 so I gave it a try and I really like it!!! I really like the fact that it doesn’t dry out so fast when you are working with it and unlike some of the paste you listed it has great working time. One other thing if I have a problem I am sure Paul will take care of it unlike some of the larger companies. (Done been there and Done that) 🙁 It may be a fad D and if something comes along better next year I am sure I will try it and if I like it I will change. But isn’t that what we a trying to do improve on our quality of work everyday????

Interesting discussion. I always said if they quit making buckeye I would quit (of course I wouldn’t have). Then it seemed to me the quality of the buckeye went down. I used Bryans supreme and I liked it. Last year at Surry I stopped and talked to Paul Cales for quit a while and decided to give his glue a try. At this present point I think it is far superior to the other glues/paste. The original question on this post was about ears. I use the pro 1 with the Eppley 360 earliners and if I do everything properly, which is the key to anything working properly, I get a very nice ear with no drumming. I have found that many taxidermist, including myself sometimes, do not want to take advantage of the advancement the industry has afforded us.

well D you got it made on the shipping end, pro 1 is the same consistancy as derma grip only it smells better, stays flexiable when dry, does not get moldy , holds detail better, and paul is great to deal with imo. and the 555 stuff ,if i am not mistaken, is for wallpaper not hide! jut had to get that of my chest.
for what its worth i use eply liners and 30 min epoxy and keep the edges carded as the hide dries

For what its worth, I am not a fan of Derma Grip even though it is a big seller, but Pro 1 is just another wall paper or carpet glue, most likely SW 555 with dextrine added, I am sure it is great, a lot of people are using it

I use eppley liners also with Pro-1 tinted pink no carding and properly fitted with no drumming, great hide paste leave it uncovered with no drying out doing lifesize bears and it holds like nails.

Nah , i added dextrine to the roman 555 to thicken it up and glued some scrap skins with it and pro-1, the pro-1 held onto the skin way better.

Ok guys, as I said the reason I use Derma-Grip is due to the fact that I can get it without shipping. I never said it was better or worse than the others. I said it worked if you have everything prepped correctly.

Im not trying to start an arguement and to prove it I will get some Pro-1 at Surry next week and try it. I bet it does the same thing the Derma-Grip does when I use it. Holds the skin to the foam.

I do think that gas from Sheetzs makes my truck run better than that gas from BP.
