OfflineOk I am working on my 1st competition deer I used eppley eyes and I have some ? . Can I clean them with lacquer thinner , what is the furniture finish that I need to add depth to the eye, where do I get it , how do I apply it and when do I put it on. I am a lil lost at this point if any one could be so kind to help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Matt, laquer thinner may cause the eye to look smokey. But don’t panic. The polish you mentioned works from what I hear, but I’ve never tried it. I use regular gloss in my airbrush. The amount needs to be applied by opening up the gun enough so when it hits the eye, it spreads around on its own. Too much, and it will run out onto the skin. Not enough and it gives a hazy dull look. Practice on a plain eye first. The reason I like it is it will run into the crack around the eye and up onto nictatating membrane and carunucle areas.
Matt I have cleaned the Eppley eyes with Lacquer thinner and have really had no problem even though I don’t think it is recommend. I personally think the best thing to do on your comp piece is to put some eye protection such as the Bowen eye protect or some brush on latex. Let it dry and paint your eyes. Don’t get it too close to the edge of the eyelids to affect the paint getting where it needs to go. When your paint is dry remove the eye protect and finish your cleanup with a toothpick. You will be amazed at how easy it will come off the edges of the eye with a toothpick. The floor wax is Futura Acrylic floor wax. It can be a little hard to find. Got mine at a local hardware store. I apply mine with a small soft brush but you have to be quick with it because it drys very fast and if your not careful you will leave brush marks on the eye. I personally would not apply the floor wax unless I had scratches I was trying to fill. Hope this is helpful.
Matt you may want to use denatured alcohol to clean the eyes. Also, the alcohol will not take the paint off the skin area you have painted as easy as lacquer thinner will. As Herman said, a toothpick will also clean the eyes very well. Try using it first and if you have trouble use the alcohol then clean up the small areas with the toothpick. Herman is also right about the floor wax. Use a soft, clean brush and dip the brush in the wax and start in the center of the eye and work in circles till you cover the whole eye. And do this fast, because it does dry fast. Don’t worry if a little gets on the eye lids, when it dries it will still have a wet look to it. If you use the wax, do it after everything is finished on your eyes. Good luck with the competition.
