Not only my first fox, but my very first fur taxidermy! I’ve cropped the nose/muzzle out because I’m still working on it. Speaking of which how do I rehydrate the nose, it’s all bent out of shape. Do I just soak it in water? I’m learning a lot. First lesson: make sure the area for the lips to tuck in is deep enough. I didn’t make it deep enough and I failed really hard on the lip tuck.

The eyes are not ‘quite’ centered in focus…but you need to give me a break for two reason. Reason one: it’s my first try. Reason two: after working for nearly an hour on my first set of eyes I realized that I was working with eyes that were too small (luckily I had purchased several sizes) and I had to pull them out and start again (dumb).

All in all I’m pleased with the work so far. Thoughts?

So the fact that the eyes weren’t set right really bothered me so I took it all apart, soaked it again and redid him.

Looks really good for your first one. How did you do the ears?

Thank you! I used ear liners…but I don’t think I cut them right, I ended up without any liner up in the tip. Any thoughts on how to measure out an ear liner for cutting? I tried pressing it against the real ear, but slight fail. Also any tips on how to undo the slight curl that they ended up with?

I just keep trimming a little at a time till they fit. I usually leave the earliner a touch on the small side to help prevent drumming when the skin dries. Make sure the ears are turned to the tips. For commercial small mammals I usually use apoxie-sculpt in the ears.

Got it. I might try the ‘bondo’ method next time and card them while they dry.

So the ear curl I have now isn’t fixable? I want to do more work on the nose, but part of me is saying “Leave well enough alone and do better next time.”

You could try soaking the ears back up then carding them, not sure how well it will work but t wouldn’t hurt…same with the nose, it wouldn’t hurt to soak it back up and get it like you want, the nose would be an easier fix then the ears

I’ll give them both a try. I also had a thought of driving some pins down into the ear tips and cutting off the heads so the fur hits the pin tips to perk the ear tips up a bit.
