Well guy’s and gal’s I just finished my first whitetail buck. I learned alot and just caped out number two today. If you would please give me some input I would greatly and humbly appreciate it!!! I appologize in advance for the lighting in the pics. The weather has been too nasty to take it out side for pics.
Thanks,
WVO

Welcome to the site . I don’t know if you have a good set of reference pictures . If not buy some . They will really help you . Your eyes have way to much clay or their set to deep . It doesn’t take much clay to set the eye . Your in the ball park though . Go to you tube setting deer eyes . Watch D Price setting an eye . And with good reference pics your next eye will be a lot better .
Your lacrimal crease or tear duct looks like it pulled out while drying . Make sure you thin around the eyes and tear duct as thin as you can .
Your ear muscles need to come up ill post pics so you know what I’m talking about
.

Looking good!…Keep an eye on your hair patterns, you want them to be symmetrical. Notice the white throat patch, fixing things like that will keep you checking on other symmetries. Try not to fill your tear duct in all the way, let it roll in softly. The 2nd picture that Hackleback posted, should help you alot on your eye set. Notice how much the eye is protruding. The upper lids need to be tucked in more to make the lashes lay at more of a downward angle. Try to follow the patterns of your existing nose nodules when texturing your nose. Looking very good for your first deer!…keep it up!
Thanks guys for your input and criticism thats what I was after. There was alot to take in on the first mount and I never thought it was perfect or would turn out perfect. I had to start somewhere!!! Eyes were very tough for me I kept going from left to right and trying to make them match from side to side. I have Rick Carters video and the breakthrough manuals I used for reference and youtube. I plan on buying an eye cast and some reference pics. I really think that particular form made it worse. You just don’t see deer in that position but the gentleman who gave me the opportunity to mount it wanted that pose. When they skinned it out they cut two big ol holes where the white patches are on the arm pits so all that had to be sewed and it just didn’t fit like it should have. I have already caped out my next one and plan on getting started on it very soon.
Thank you guy’s very much for your input I really appreciate it!!!

WVO, congrats on getting your first one together. Im not gonna sugar coat it, you have a lot going on here, but then again so did everyone on their first deer.
By your above reply, you seem to have fairly thick skin and can take constructive criticism well. My suggestion would be get you some good reference pics and cast, put you another deer together and take it to the WVTA show next month, enter it in professional and have it judged and get you a good critique. That will put you far ahead of the learning curve.
Contact Lone Wolf (Billy Robertson) on these forums, he is your state President and he can get you the info you need, it will be well worth your time if you are serious about taxidermy.
Good Luck and welcome to the world of taxidermy.
Thanks D. Price!!! Lone Wolf actually PM’d me a while back about joining the WVTA. I work Tues through Sat so it’s difficult for me to get off on the weekends but I would love to go. I defenately want to continue to improve. I may be able to work something out I’ll have to look into it.
Thanks again,
WVO

OfflineI’m a beginner myself, and have never mounted a deer, but I want to say that I hope my first deer looks atleast HALF as good as your first deer! Lots of great, constructive criticism on here, and very helpful photos posted. Nicer than a lot of posts I’ve seen on similar forums. Keep at it…you’ve got others like myself looking up to you now! 🙂

OfflineHere’s a couple pretty good pic from the front of a deer face and eye. Google whitetail Deer reference, there’s a bunch of pics that will help you out. Joining your local Taxidermy Association really will would be a good first step in improving your mounts. Best thing I ever did.

Just keep at it.
