I am a new member to the site and I must say that like it a great deal! There is a lot of great information that you guys share and I am glad that I have access to your wisdom. Here is a question that I have been thinking about for a while. Say someone brings you a mount that they just had done and they wanted you to remount it for them because they were not happy with it. Either the facial expression was odd or greatly misrepresented, or the neck of a deer was severely undersized. What is the process for remounting a mount? Is the process different for life size animals as compared with deer heads? If it were purely a facial issue, could you just rehydrate the head and redo it? No one has brought me a mount like this, but I want to be prepared if it occurs.

If it is a deer/game head I would get a new cape and start from the beginning using their original horns. If it is bad enough that they don’t like it, you most likely can’t fix it…….atleast I wouldn’t fix someone else’s crap and have my name associated with it.

Thanks D. That’s what I thought for a deer, but what about the face of a fox or bobcat? Could the entire head be redone to correct crooked ears and “scared” eyes?

Yes, it is possible. But it depends on what kind if any glue was used, was the skin tanned or DP’ed, how old is it and other variables that just make it impossible to know without actually trying. They could have used an epoxy glue that would make impossible to move the skin without damaging it. A DP’ed skin could slip when rehydrated…..and an old tanned skin could fall apart when rehydrated.

I would just tell them you could get them a replacement skin and mount it for them……or even better, “why didn’t you bring it to me first”? Thats my favorite.

I would remount mammals also . Don’t make their crap look better . Tell them you’ll mount another fox or bobcat . Trash it and make them a work of art .

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I like the way y’all think! That would probably be the best way to get people to realize that cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to taxidermy.
