I have a 12 year old mount. I would like to remove the cape and put it on a new form. Have any of you ever done this before and if so, how do you remove the cape. Thanks.

It depends on what type of hide paste it was mounted with. If it was mounted with a water based adhesive, you can wrap wet towels around all of the hide and use plastic wrap or tape to hold the towels on until the moisture hydrates the hide and loosens the adhesive. If an epoxy type adhesive was used it could be impossible to get off in one piece, but you may get lucky. Personally, I would just get another cape. Good luck!

Is it a tanned skin? If so do you know what tan was used on it?

Well, as Kreeder said, it’s possible if it was mounted using a water based hide glue if you rehydrate it well before trying to remove it.

You can soak it up and remove it but I am afraid the skin will retain enough memory that mounting on a different manikin may not be possible. Only one way to find out, and it requires you to be willing to lose the cape in the process.
