I just had one of my mounts get done drying. It seems that the seam behind the antler (I use the y cut) has pulled apart about .25 of an inch. I am very unhappy with the look of it even tho it is not very noticeable. I am not sure of the best way to try and figure out how to fix this issue. Any help would be great, i dont want this deer leaving my house looking like that.

I would also like to add that is was a replacement cape i had bought from a tannery. I feel the rack my customer brought me is most likely larger than the one that came off of the original deer. This is the first time i have ever replaced a cape.

I’m no expert by far Skin Deep, but I’ve experienced this issue before too. I know probably this best way is to rehydrate, but I’ve not done that after a complete dry. I’ve only done that on semi dry and I guess I caught it before it had a total open seam and then I just rehydrated the skull plate area and down the seam, which I was lucky there because it was my first short cut and just applied more hide paste and tighten up the stitches. The other fix I’ve done on a seam separation is to hot glue small patches of hair from a another cape of the same color and just give it a little haircut when finished . . . Just practice a little gluing small patches together before starting on the deer itself because the hair will have to lay in a certain direction. Also I started at the end stitch and you may have to too if need be and work back towards the antler burr.

That is great advice! Thanks KnobCreek, I dont want to rehydrate it because i know how tight it was when everything was wet never mind now. Plus the pull is really not that big maybe dime size, it happened where the skin in the back of the antler meets back up, if that makes any seance. I need to take a look around and see what i have for extra deer cape. Really appreciate the reply!

If it is a tanned skin rehydrate it and cut stitches out, trim the skin to fit around bur correctly and sew back up.

Is it around the pedicle or the Y incision? If around the pedicle I have in the past took a ball of sculpt epoxy and shoved it under the antler burr and took a modeling tool and tucked some of the hair into the epoxy to anchor it up close to the antler burr. Another thing if you have a replacement cape and it doesn’t fit right you can use a pneumatic brad gun and push the hide up tight to the antlers and punc a few nails in there to hold in place while it dries. Stays tight against the skin and will never see it. Do you cinch your stitches as you are sewing? About every 4th stitch I will grab them both separately and cinch them down real tight to prevent the seeing the stitch line after it dries.
