When we moved into our house about 20 years ago, my Dad put all of his whitetail mounts in the basement. He didn’t take any measures to control the climate and over the years, the mounts started to show the wear from being down there. My question is, is it possible to display your mounts in a basement safely if you control the temperature & humidity?

My wife and I are moving into a new house soon and the basement is finished, but it is still below grade and there is a temperature difference when you go down there. I don’t want to display my mounts down there if they are going to get damaged at all.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As long as you control the environment you should be fine. Insects and rodents could be an issue. Are they all on the wall or are there any that sit on the floor, where mice could get to them?

Were they tanned or dry preserved?

Thank you for the response. I will have to check with my taxidermist to see how he prepared the hides, but I’m almost positive they were tanned. I have a bear and a coyote that are floor mounts in addition to whitetail heads and a turkey that hangs on the wall.

Any idea what the optimal humidity/temperature is?

It needs to be kept like you would your house.

The Turkey could be a problem with insects, if there is a way for them to get in. Especially if it was not fleshed well.

You said the basement was finished, so I am assuming, dry wall, carpet and ac/heat.

Yes, that’s correct.
