Ok I agree I should be Charging $600 for a deer but like D said if he doesn’t take a single deer he will be fine he has a full time job. This is my full time job so I can’t take that chance does anyone get this?????? I am the highest around here but there is no way I will survive charging over $500 for a deer head and everyone else is less than $400. I know we all won’t agree on this and in 5 years I maybe out of business because I didn’t go up enough and YES I do struggle to pay the bills around here at times but I do get to do things like take my kids to school everyday, go to their plays at school, play basketball with them anytime I want and still get my work done and don’t have to ask anyone if I can take off to do these things. I had done HVAC work for 17 years and I did make more money doing that but it didn’t allow me to do what I loved (like Taxidermy and spending quality time with my family. Just couldn’t do both!!!!) Maybe some may think I am looking at this the wrong way but I see my job allowing me to do more than just make money. Just my thoughts.
This is my full time job as well..I charge $385.00..If I charged what I should, I would seriously have 1-3 deer to work on…Montgomery college (taxidermy school) is 40mins from the house, with part-time taxidermist everywhere doing deer for $300 or less, and MoSt people (down this way atleast!) will be willing to take a chance on quality to save $85.00. I know exactly what you mean Steve.. Does everyone here think it is as simple as going to all the 20 some taxidermist in the area and coming up with a satisfying price????? I just don’t see it being that simple…I pay bills one deer head at a time, and struggle with finances!, and I tRuLy believe going up to 450 or higher would hurt me more then help me. Simply because of the part-timers mounting deer for $300 and will stick with that no matter what!
Justin I have seen your work, and it is worth a lot more than $385. You need to not let what the other guy is doing effect any choices you make about your business.
How many deer are you doing a year?
Please don’t take this the wrong way, I really would like to have a healthy discussion about this without someone getting mad.
Thanks guy’s, I was trying to pick the right words when i posted , hoping that every one took them the way i intended.I’m hoping to go to competition this year and get a judge to tell me were i’m at , i think this will help me make my decision on my heads. And thinks Mr.Vincent i see where you coming from,And yes i would love to see Pages numbers I will be posting pictures of more deer soon,so feel free to tell me what yall see and where i need improvment,Like the small NOSE ,aint that right D.
Definitely not getting mad…The question I asked was not meant to be sarcastic at all..lol..It was serious..I have been messing around with taxidermy since age 12, but only for the public for the last 3years..I honestly want to hear how to make this more simple..Do you really think I would benefit from going up higher than all of the other local taxidermist??…Not asking anyone to make any financial decisions for me,lol, But I really would like advice on this, because it’s about time customers will be asking for prices!…I took in around 40 deer last season.

honeybee man. . . I’m not exactlly sure where you are in Georgia but I did taxidermy from 2002 – 2006 in Georgia . I still know quite a few Taxidermists in the Albany/Leesburg area. There are deffinitly taxidermists charging more than you.
I am 2 hours south east of Albany. Can you believe i am higher than 5 people i know right now.

the public will make you work for nothing if you let them. how many times do you see other contractors talk about what to charge? in the taxidermy field its a sin against God and country to make a living doing what few people can do right. anybody can mount a deer but only a very few can make a living at it.

Think about it.
If he is doing 150 deer at $385 wonder why he is teaching a class? Maybe he needs more income.
If they are not teaching business classes you shouldn’t even give them a second thought in my opinion. 99% of those guys will not be around in the industry in 3 years.
I don’t care what anyone around me charges though. You definately need to raise your prices.
I’m sure I’ll get some feed back on this post.

Nick I am pretty sure i know who you are talking about!!!! Make it 10 because I got 2 of them to remount!!!! If I remember right they were charging 285 I think???
