I have not done a lot of deer heads in my life but I have never encountered an eye like this. So I am reaching out to the experienced people here to help guide me on this. This eye on the deer looks funky to me. It is almost like it is practically bald around the eye. And it is this way on both eyes. I bought the skin from a seller in Montana years ago and put it in a sealed bag in my freezer until about a week ago when I started working on it.
I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but the skin was loaded with ticks. We are talking about hundreds of them on this cape. Any suggestions? I wet the eyes down and bagged it for the night while I try to research this. Thanks!

OfflineVic, from what I see in your picture, you need to push the wax gland skin further in. raise the front of the upper eyelid, and add the upper eyelid crease. round out to lower skin down in the rear and flatten somewhat the back eye corner. all if it is not to dry. you can cover it with a wet paper towel, kept wet if it has dried out, and burnish it as it dries. the eye skin looks very normal for a lot of deer. I finish my game eyes with Pan Pastels and lock down with flat lacquer. hope this helps
Thanks for the suggestions Marshy Creek. I do appreciate it. I knew I had additional work to do on the eye but I stopped when I saw what it looked as I described above. Of all the deer I have photographed and the few mounts I have attempted I never saw one like that (lucky I guess!).
As I have posted on here before, I am only a hobbyist (and do not plan to quit my day job) so it is still very much a learning in progress for me. I wish I could get some professional training but you know, $400 – $500 per day is hard to come by on a teachers salary and children in college. Maybe one day…..!
Thanks again.
