My son and I like to hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and we are looking into getting a Garmin device to help us pace ourselves along the Appalachian Trail in the park (72 miles). We are looking into the eTrek 20 so we have a altimeter and distance gauge primarily but it has other good features on it we can use for future hikes as well.
Does anyone on here own one of these or a similar model (the eTrek 10 or 30) that can share some insight. It comes with a preloaded map but I don’t think it will have the trail map of the Smokies on it which is what we want more than streets. Reading specifications and what is included does not answer our questions. We went to a couple places that are “authorized retailers” but they don’t stock anything; they all say “We can order anything we want.” So they really have no first hand knowledge of what we are looking for. I gave up on Garmin answering their phone after the third time of being on hold for about a half hour with no answer.
Any information would be appreciated.
