I don’t get much squirrel hunting in anymore, but I’d hate to guess how many I shot with a mag years ago. Back when I was growing ginseng I’d always have the rifle when working with the beds and squirrel was in season, it was damage control as much as anything, so if I could see a patch of hair in a tree 50 yards away it was pretty much a dead squirrel, a little tough on the meat at times;)
Same deal in the tall pines in Georgia, as long as you could see them you could shoot them. The mag was my meat gun for years, always had one in the truck, and it was always sighted in! Super X jacketed hollow point, wonderful little bullet!
Lot of people take coyotes here from tree stands with their bow, but can’t have a second hunting implement here. I’d probably have to empty the magazine to hope to get one with a pistol, good job takeing two out!
I have to wonder why the .17 Hornet was made up when the .17 Remington’s been around for years. Pretty sure you can slow it down to that Hornet speed, but still kick it up too.
I grew up hunting squirrels with my grandpa, he would carry a .22 and I would carry my little 410. Came in handy when there were more than one moving quickly from limb to limb. Nowadays I’ve started using my Gamo .22 pellet gun. A lot less damage but you give up a lot of range even though its 1200 fps.
I’m gonna have to do some research on this .17 Hornet, sounds interesting.
