Alright, so my pochard had 8 ducklings and 1 by 1 have died. Only 2 remain. They are now larger than a teal and doing fine. My ringed teal just had 8 this Sunday. 2 have died today. Bonnie caught the culprits redhanded. The tree ducks were drowning them! So, we went for a swim in the duck pond with the dip net. Caught them and tossed them in a pet carrier. That’s where they’ll stay till the new ducklings get bigger. Of course you know this means I will be adding a second pen. So next year we can put the newborns away from the adult birds. Just venting…
Page,
In my little pond I have some Mallards that we started from duckling size about 5 years ago. I installed floating nest boxes for the 2nd season & had babies everywhere. About 100. By the 4th year everyone in the area was real impressed with my “duck farming”. Then I let too many males stay alive & they were pulling the females out the nest boxes, raping & eventually killing most of my breeders. So I balanced the numbers & got me some mounts for my effort. Started having babies again this spring & noticed we were losing them one a day or so. Not a good breeding season. Since the nests are floating i haven’t been worried about predators & turtles aren’t a problem. Finally figured it out. My 5 lb plus LM Bass have been getting a few babies & a pesky crow slips in on a sneak attack every now & then. frustrating to say the least…
