Im kind of new to competing and i’m wanting to learn more about how it all works. Once you are certified in a certain category, does that mean you must move up a division in that category? If not, when do you have to move from professional to masters? Also I would like to know what exactly the award of excellence is. Thanks for any info!

Certified does not mean you have to move to Masters Division. The requirement for Certified Taxidermist are on the NCTA website on the certified taxidermist page. Award of Excellence in a given category does mean you have to move to the Masters Division in that category. To receive the award of excellence you must have a minimum of 21 points and at least one blue ribbon in that category. Hope this helps answer your question.

So what do the “points” mean, and how exactly are they earned?

1st place Ribbon is 3 points, 2nd is 2 points and 3rd is 1. Have to have at least one 1st and a total of 21 points for award of excellence.

Points are earned by ribbons you have won. If I remember right a blue is 3 points red 2 points and white 3 points. If you get a blue and BOC you can get Certified then or earn 12 points I think to get certified this is in the Pro division. Hope this helps

Okay, so if you get 1 blue and 1 BOC you are able to be certified? Is it 12 or 21 points? And is all of your earnings on record from when you started in the pro division, or does it only start after you pay to become certified?…

Hinson it carries through in the pro division from the past you can’t pay to be certified until you have you points and I am not sure the total of points you have to have for that but I think it is 12.

N.C. will accept your ribbon points from any show in the country you attend. You can show the score sheets to John for proof. BUT, you have to have 1 1stplace from N.C. When you achieve the 21 points, you recieve your Award of Excellence. You then go on to the Masters. If you complete 3 AoE, in 3 different catagories, you will recieve the Masters Taxidermist Award. In our 30 plus years, only 12 of us have achieved this honor. The Certified doesn’t require blue ribbons. It requires a combination of ribbons to show your learning process as a progressing taxidermist. You pay a fee each year to be certified and put on the list, where potential clients can see who is available in their area.

OK I just checked site For Certification its 1 blue and 5 more points or 2 reds and 5 more points or a blue and BOC. The point system is 4 points for a blue, 3 points for a red and 2 points for a white.

My first competition was at the last NCTA. I entered a whitetail in the PRo division and got a second place, so I reckon i have 3pts.
