I am trying to get some ideas on what manikin i should use for my first attempt at a deer head mount. I have been looking them over on the net and there are several to choose from, are they all basically the same or are some easier to work with than others. i would like to do a semi sneak deer by the way.

There are some that are easier to work with than others, but since it is your first attempt, no maninkin is going to work miracles. I say pick one and mount on it then try a different one the next time based on what you did and didn’t like about the first one.

If you choose the W-04 1/4 sneak from Gene, the skin is easier to slide on and adjust. semi-sneaks and uprights take a little more effort if your skin doesn’t fit properly. When you order, choose a form slightly smaller than your measurements. You will be able to TAXI the skin easier and more accurately. A bigger form will have areas that don’t fit properly and will give you more problems. If that happens, you need to understand anatomy and know how to make adjustments to the form.

well i am a tad apprehensive about this endeavor, I also understand that it being my first mount it’s not going to look perfect, but i do want it to look good! I am opting to send it to Arlington Cape to have it tanned. and if things do not turn out like i anticipate how hard is it to redo the whole mount by a professional???

Well, I guess it depends on if you have to replace the cape.

If you bring it to me as a remount, I am gonna replace the cape. I am not gonna spend a lot of time repairing someones mistakes and still have a substandard product with my name on it.

We all had to start some where, if this deer is that important to you mount a few others first and then tackle that one. Don’t put so much pressure on your self at first. Instead of paying some one to remount the deer why not take a good mounting class, D Price would be a great guy to call. 😉
