I tried something different today for a base. The issue is its not setting up still soft . I wanted to try mixing resin with my earth mix instead of the way I normaly do it with glue. its been 5 hours I mixed like directions said 14 drops to 1oz of resin. is there something i can do to speed it up. Or am I going to have to redo it ?
Thanks for any help
I had the same trouble with resin and dirt. I don’t know what the problem is but for some reason it just will not harden like it is suppose to. I have already tried more hardner and it did’t work either. i can tell you what i found that works really good and that is Glaze Coat from Lowes. I have started using that on all my Habitats now and have had No trouble anymore. This is a habitat I had on my hogs at the NCTA show this year and it is all done in Glaze Coat

I know I don’t understand the issue I have seen people use it and it worked for them.
Interesting where is it in the paint section.
Also what is the working time and set up time ? Does it have a hardener like bondo and resin.
Does it have a wet look when dry if so how would use it for dry dirt look.
Nice Mount by the way I like it.
I have had friends tell me That my dirt must be damp but the last time I use resin I know it was dry!!! Glaze Coat is a 2 part Epoxie it is what is used on Table tops for a high gloss shine. The working time is around 6 hours depending how you mix it if you mix 50/50 you will have plenty of time sometimes for water I mix a little more hardner if I am trying to make any kind of movement in the water for still water I mix 50/50. As far as dry dirt look I would go back as the epoxie is starting to kick and just sprinkle the dry dirt on it and once it dries it will stay there. I have done that on a few bases for clients where there is a higher spot in habitat kinda going down to a swamp type area.
The glaze coat from Lowes will do what Steve described and is great for many applications.
Any time you mix anything with fiberglass resin it retards the set time so you have to throw the instructions out the window. One thing I have always done when using resin in base work is to warm the resin and hardener. Use more hardener and put a heat lamp on it ( 2 or 3 feet away ) to get it to kick. But it will still take some time…far more than normal.
Best fix for your problem though is the glaze from Lowes. It is the epoxy that is used to coat bar tops and such.
