Hello to all, I’m opening my shop this year and have spent a small fortune. I need a fleshing machine to complete the main equipment I need. I am planning on buying the S and S but cant at this time ( money). I am planning on buying an inexpensive one to get me through this season. Has anyone used or know anything about the S-900 machine Research and Jim Allred sells. I’m between the S-900 or the Dakota V. Any help would be grateful. Tks

I wouldn’t buy neither one, I would wait until I ran across a used Raw Hide. Hard to beat.

For what it is worth, I think you are better off going into debt now to get what you want over buying something you will need to replace in the near future (two to three years lets say). I wish I had done that when I got my Dakota IV. It was all I could afford (cash) at the time. I am not knocking the unit; it does do the job but it is slow.

(I know this was months ago you posted this and by this time you probably have already bought the machine but maybe it will help someone else down the road!)

We’ve used a handheld Flesh All mini flesher for years. (Tried the Merlin, too. But it wouldn’t flesh worth a darn. Other ‘gadgets’ are neat, though.) Had a big flesher, but it was too hard on the ole back.

I have considered getting the Merlin myself but since I had a Dakota IV and a mini flesher (air powered) I didn’t know if it was any better than the mini.  Glad I didn’t invest in it now!  I wonder if I am doing something wrong with my Dakota.  I have a back problems to begin with but it seems to be hard on my back if I am on it more than 20 – 25 minutes.

We have been using the Dakota Pro from Van Dykes/McKenzie for years http://www.mckenziesp.com/DKFP…..C5895.aspx

I would definitely recommend it, But any advice D. Price or Jeremy has should be listened to first. These guys have a ton of experience using fleshing wheels !

They all do the exact same thing. But for the money, the ones on the market now are cheaper made, thinner lightweight steel, plastic guards(unless you pay more to upgrade).

I would prefer a 20 year old Rawhide or a 60+ year old Reliable Machine Company shaving machine for a $1000, rather than a brand new in the box, anything modern, for $1500 to $2500, PERIOD! Now that is if all original parts are included.

Here is a pic of my 26+ year old Rawhide Taxidermy Model….I wouldn’t take $2000 for it. I bought it brand new from McKenzie for $980 + tax and shipping in 1988.

They are out there, if you are patient and know what you are looking for you can find one.

What did you do, just clean that thing up and give it a paint job, or is that a picture from when you first got it? I have parts and pieces for rawhides, and the foundry patterns, you think you can move them for $1500.00 if we build them?

That old Monarch must have been sitting around awhile, looks like it was still running a flat belt. I don’t think too many people today would even be willing to run that open hood. Wink

That pic was taken right after I painted and cleaned it last year.

Are you talking table top taxidermy models like mine Keith, or the fur dressers models?

Rework that Monarch into a V-Belt system and I would run the hell out of it, it will not clog up as easy or at all with fleshings, save hours of cleaning out.

Both, but most parts are for table top. The hood for the fur dresser model would be tough, the guy at the foundry said a pattern cold be done to make it in one piece, but I can’t understand how it would work.

I don’t know if you move them or not for that….especially as longs these made out of Chinese monkey metal are selling for this. It looks practically out of the box.  This is the second one this week.

That’s the problem, simply can’t compete with the price of them, I have a lot more cost in getting mine built than what those sell for.
