AFTER I SKINNED SQUIRREL, I WENT THROUGH THE SAME PROCEDUES AS I DO WHEN I TAN A DEER HIDE . I THINK WHILE THE SQUIRREL WAS IN PICKLE BATH, A SECTION OF THE TAIL SLIPPED DOWN. HAIR DID NOT FALL OUT.  IT WAS ABOUT A FOURTH OF THE TAIL FROM THE END SLIPPED DOWN. AS IF IT  TORE FROM THE REST OF THE TAIL. I DID KEEP IN PICKLE A COUPLE OF DAYS,  COULD I HAVE LEFT IT TO LONG?  CAN ANYONE ADVISE ME OF WHAT I DID WRONG.   THANKS, TOMMY

I have left skins in a pickle for months before (foxes no less) with no ill effects.  As long as you keep the pH between 1-2 I don’t think that was the problem was.

I agree with Vic, probably not the tanning solution. It could have been torn or rotting before you put it in. Did you case out the tail or open it up? Sometime the tanning cannot get into the tail area if it is cased.

I CASED IT OUT. MAYBE I MUST HAVE MIS HANDLED IT SOME HOW AND DIDNT REALIZE I DID. I’M NOT SURE , BUT I APPRECIATE THE ADVISE.

When I tan a squirrel, I always run a wire down the tail and poke a hole through the end of the tail. Several times a day I will inject pickle into the tail and I do the same with the tan. You can also run a cotton string through the tail and out the end to serve as a wick. This probably isn’t the answer to you problem, but it’s some advice just for future reference.
