You didn’t mention if you salted the hide immediately after you completed the skinning process. I always salt for at least 24 hours, shake off and resalt again for another 24 hours before I put the skin in the pickle. You should be using about a pound of salt per gallon of water for the pickle solution.
And of course how the skin was handled before you received it plays a big role. You get something like a thin skinned fox and it sits too long before freezing it could very well result in a disaster.
