A while back, I believe it was Chris Horne, said I needed to try Pro 1 Hide Paste, in another thread. Well I got a gallon from Paul as I said I would do in that same thread. I went as far as getting 2 more gallons at the NCTA show.
I have used nearly 1 entire gallon so far, I’ve done 6 Deer Heads and a L/S Coyote.
I usually use Derma Grip(and I’ve used lots of it) mainly because I can pick it up from HQ while I’m at work. I love the consistency of it, as it is more of a true paste. The biggest drawback to me on Derma Grip you never know what you will get as far as thickness/thinness and it does dry very hard and brittle. But if you have the correct form and everything prepped correctly it will hold a tanned skin to a form.
I have also used quite a bit of Bryan’s Supreme from OTS. I really like the way it dries. It dries fairly quickly, but still gives you a good amount of working time. It also has more of a rubber or flexible feel to it when it dries. However, I do wish it was a little thicker, but it always seems to be the same every time I open a new bucket, so I can live with that.
Now to the Pro 1. I love the thickness of it(again it is more like a true paste), now as I stated, I’ve only used about a gallon so far, so I don’t know enough to say if is always the same thickness, batch to batch. It worked great on an open Cast Lip Coyote I mounted. It held the skin right in place, no super glue or epoxies needed around the lips. I can also get those same results with Bryan’s Supreme. Personally I think the Pro 1 dries a little slower and I’m not fond of that, especially in thin areas where the skin dries fast. When the skin is dry I want the glue to be dry as well. Like Bryan’s Supreme it dries with more of a flexible feel that I love.
With all that said. If I have everthing correctly prepped with the right size and properly sculpted form, I can get any hide paste to hold that skin to the form.
I also stated in the other thread, that the pastes seem to be a fad, for the longest time I heard the Sherwin Williams 555 glue was the best thing since sliced bread, and now all I seem to here is Pro 1. All of that is fine if at the end of the day it holds what you are glueing. I guarentee you there will be something else come along shortly that will be “The Best Ever” especially if it is marketed correctly. When it does, I’ll dig up this thread and say, I told you so.
But, for now, if I had the three of them sitting in front of me to use I will pick Bryan’s Supreme for daily use.
In my opinion Bryan’s paste has stood the test of time from years and gallons used. And It is gonna be hard to beat.
I do like the smell of Pro 1. It reminds me of the new carpet smell in a house.
Well I am glad you tried it D. I was one of the ones that really liked 555 at one time but like I said if something better comes along I will give it a try and if I like it I will change. I will give Bryan’s paste a try now after reading your post but if you want to sell the 2 buckets of Pro1 you got let me know 😀
Im not trying to change anyone’s mind. If I was I would say Derma Grip because we sell it. I just wanted to give a fair and unbiased account of my experiences.
Tuggy I’m gonna use the Pro 1, by the time I get through the 3 gallons I my have a different outlook as I have not used as much of it as the other products. Don’t get me wrong, Pro 1 is a great product and it works, I just prefer OTS’ product.
But I can say, as far back as before [A Supply Company] bought out Buckeye, Bryan’s hide paste has been hard to beat.
This is just my opinion.
I have used Buckeye and it worked really well. I like trying new products glue, forms, eyes, try to keep an open mind on things. Some things I try I like some I don’t. But I respect your opinion enough D that I will try Bryan’s paste. I like Pro 1 I have used 20 gallons + this year but like I said I am open to trying new things. Does Bryan’s paste shrink down like Buckeye or does it hold its fullness like Pro 1? In other words can you make wrinkles on the back of the ears and they stay and look full? I know this is how I use pro1 and it works instead of using clay back there.
Ive used 555. Our Sherwinn Williams quit selling it. It worked . Derma grip worked but I like fast easy application with a brush with Bryan’s Supreme. Easy to apply and it does stick and hold detail very well. It Is elastic when dry. I’m getting five gallons next order. But as D said if your form is correct size and cape is prepped correctly the glues stated above all work.
