I am currently a full-time fireman of 10 years now and probally still will be for the next 20 years. I have a major passion for the outdoors, mainly hunting. I’m trying to get into to taxidermy, to eventaully start my own small shop. I have a fellow fireman that is getting me lined up to do taxidermy with his brother after this years hunting season. He is a well established taxidermist and I’m sure I will learn alot. Right know I’m starting to read alot of forums and have watched tons of videos over the past few months. I’m going to attempt to start some of my own work by myself. What are the best videos or manuals to get me started and headed into the right direction. Any infomation will be helpful. Thanks.

Here is the deal. Most new guys or gals that get into this, buy a few videos, some tools, then start charging for deer heads. The problem is, that when they get a few years under there belt and get to turn out good stuff, they have already ruined their name and end up going out of business.

I think you are in a good position with a back up job and not in a big hurry to get going. Just be careful about taking on work to quick on your own.

Now to answer your question.
Deer heads….Rick Carters A to Z DVD
Small Mammals……Brian Harness Bobcat video series ( Should cover other small mammals with techniques)
Not sure about fish as its been a few years since i watched any fish or bird videos.

Good Luck!!!

Ya, I’m gonna take my time. I’m gonna start practicing with the stuff I shoot (Deer and Varmits) and hopefully in two to three years I can start building a small business. I have a 3 year old and one year old daughters and I’m going to wait until they get into school to try to start makng money at it. And then after I get a little comfortable with that I’ll try to do some birds. Thats my plan, I hope it works out. Thanks for the advice.

That is good advice from WBH, but it’s never to early to start gaining experience with your own kills. I would say the earlier, the better.
