Vincent, to answer your question, I really don’t know. I have seen it used many times and in many ways. I know what the NCTA criteria is to be recognized as one in the association. But I really don’t know what that means.

What ever it is, I will most likely never be one.

Straight from Webster:

TAXIDERMIST

n. The art or operation of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of dead animals for exhibition in a lifelike state

i think there needs to at least on more word in the term ‘master taxidermist’ describing what they are a master of. Like master fish taxidermist, master bird taxidermist, etc. because i think it would be pretty hard to be on the master level in all “disciplines” of taxidermy

In the NCTA a “master taxidermist” is a taxidermist that has received his or her award of excellence in 3 or more categories. Not sure what other state organizations do but Randy Dunkley would be a good person to ask.

What if the person was a World Champion in waterfowl and had also won the “Master of Masters” title at the World Taxidermy Competition, but has never mounted a mammal, would that person not be considered a master taxidermist?

I know what the criteria for NC is. I just wondered what taxidermist thought of this term. I have never herd someone when ask, what do you do, reply, I am a Master Taxidermist. I know guys who don’t compete that are way better than most master taxidermist. Does that make them any less a taxidermist, I don’t think so. I am not taking away from anyone who has achieved there masters, that is a great honor. I here people called Masters because they compete in the Masters division. There are guys who are good at only one thing, birds for example, does that make them a Master. It’s the guys who can mount anything that I would call a Master. I guess you could call yourself a Master Bird Taxidermist. Jeremy, I would say if someone won a World Championship and The Masters Of Masters would trump any state criteria, just my opinion.

Able to mount anything? That would be my guess. Just like the term master mechanic. Being able to fix any vehicle.
