I was just wondering how many of you have used this acid in your pickling bath? I have read it is a dangerous chemical but i see that several supply houses sell it,so is it that dangerous or not?I have read that several people recommend citric acid as an alternative.Any thought would be appreciated
Dave,
All acids are dangerous to one degree or another.
As for in the pickle bath, follow any directions that may have came with it.
Check your pH regulary.
I use to use oxalic acid for scrubbing our wood cutting blocks to bleach and sanitize
them after cut meat on them, then scrub and rinse with baking soda water to nuetralize
them.
I am not familiar with this acid. I have been using Formic for 18 years now and will continue to as long as I can get it. I don’t need anybody to come on and beat me up for using Formic. I have heard all the arguments and opinions. I have tried many of the alternatives such as Citric and Safety acid with poor results. I believe the important thing with any of these chemicals is taking the right precautions and proper disposal. I just had a long discussion with a student this week about this very subject. I surely would not want to lead anybody wrong but for me formic acid is the best acid for the pickling process.
As long as your satisfied with results, that’s the bottom line.
I know some people will argue and defend their choice of acid is the best,
but (with out going into the technical details) some tans bond to the skin fibers
better with certain acids.
Apparently Ithfp, you are using the right combination.
