Forgive me for my ignorance, but would you enlighten me as to the defintion of a “Dark Comedy”?

I will not give information to give someone ammo to cast this industry in a negative way, and you will probably be hard pressed to find anyone else here who will as well.

If I have misunderstood your purpose here, once again, I apologize for my ignorance in the matter. But Dark and Comedy don’t sound like something I would like to be a part of.

….and why would you use corn meal to soak up blood, sounds kind of expensive?…..and what is a taxidermy “lab”?

I agree with Price. You say you have a little taxidermy experience……what taxidermist uses corn meal to soak up ” bodily fluids” and calls his shop a ” taxidermy lab” . I am wondering about your taxidermy experiences.

Your wording is fine. You simply sound like someone that is not familiar with the taxidermy business. I would do a lot of research into this business before you write anything. Good luck.

You just eliminated me. I get $600 for a deer head, I’m the bad guy that charges to much. You need one of these guys who do them for near nothing because everyone should be able to afford to get their trophy mounted.

I’m not touching that one.

You might want to read it again, he didn’t work for USFW.

The state Conservation Department set up the undercover taxidermy….

Details my friend!!! Thats an important part of taxidermy.

For you deer only guys, corn meal is a cheaper material to use for absorbing animal fluids. Mainly used by bird guys. But potato starch is better I believe. And ain’t we a paranoid bunch! Geesh, if the guy wants to write a story, at least give him some facts. Wouldn’t that be better than him just making it up? Ok, I’ll bite! Hunters generally know how we put animals together. But the general public always wants to know if they are STUFFED with hay, burlap, old clothes, or cotton. “Are the eyes real?”, is a common question I get. “I thought your shop would smell like rotten animals”, is another. As far as quirks, well, when you work by your self for 20 years, it’s hard to have a conversation with “normal” people. I mean, other than taxidermy, hunting, fishing, religion, guns, and politics, what else is interesting enough to talk about? Alright fellows, let me have it!

We use potato starch for hand tumbling small, delicate birds like Doves…works great. We have used corn meal ( among other things) over the years to absorb fluids, but I like powdered borax much better.

I didn’t mean to bust your nuts kyote. Good luck with you story.

Back to the lab…….

I did. But you can still carry on with story about the Taxidermy Lab…..I thought you were mounting a duck dog to start with.

I use salt and a fan. That pretty much takes care of all the body fluids.

Kyote wrote: What are common things said to you in response?

Why does it cost so much?

The guy down the street will “stuff” it for $250.

Why does it take so long?

If I bring you 2 can I get a deal?

Why does a neck mount cost the same as a shoulder mount?

Is it cheaper if I skin it myself?

Will you wash the blood out of the hair?

Will the bullet hole stilll be there when I get it back?

Ring! Ring! Is my deer ready yet? Not rushing you, just checking on the progress.

i explain the whole process to anyone that wants to listen to me and Igor ramble on about what happens out in the lab late at night. like D and page and everyone else has said the first question is How much followed by How long and can you fix this. when the critters start to talk back to me its time to turn off the light and head to the house. Igor is calling so its time to go to work.
