I have only been doing taxidermy for about 6 months and learned a lot at Surry and the NCTA shows. I work 45hrs a week at my full time job and about 30hrs in my taxidermy shop. I would like to know how most of you plan out what you work on, like mount so many deer then ducks then lifesize, etc. For those who mount ducks, do you skin out a couple then mount them or skin out 1 and finish it before starting another. I am open for any ideas or suggestions to save time. Thanks!
I went to the mini course at Surry, but I took a 1 year class at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC. I have been working on items in order for the most part, I would mount a few deer as I receieved the capes from the tanner and I would work on ducks between. I took in 12 deer, 3 bear, 30 ducks and a few small game items my first 6 months in business. I put my last deer on the form Thursday night, now I can focus on the birds. Thanks for the feedback, I am open for any suggestions.
Thanks, Scott! I have had customers calling me already wanting to know if their stuff is ready and only been doing it for 6 months. I have had a couple of customers that paid me in full and they did get special treatment. I am learning pretty fast that people think taxidermists are non-profit miracle workers.
